3 NUTRITIOUS CEREAL FOR YOUR KIDS

Fonio Cereal

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup fonio
  • 2 cups cold water
  • Breast Milk or Formula (Optional)
  • Fresh strawberries, banana or any fruit of choice

Directions:

  1. Place the Fonio in a pot, add water and cook on medium heat for 5 minutes uncovered 
  2. After 5 minutes, reduce the heat to low, cover and simmer gently for another 2 -3 minutes. By this time, the Fonio should appear quite solid.
  3. Take off the heat, add milk to the porridge to bring it to your desired consistency. Add any fruit of choice 

Fonio belongs to the millet family, and it is a superfood based on its nutritional profile. Fonio is gluten free. It contains high levels of zinc, magnesium and calcium and other macronutrients essential for developing children.

 

Ogi or Akamu smoothie

Ingredients:

  • Ogi Powder or Frozen Ogi
  • Water
  • Fresh strawberries, banana or any fruit of choice

Directions:

  1. Dissolve your Ogi powder or frozen Ogi in a large bowl with just enough water to form a smooth thick paste.
  2. Bring water to a boil 
  3. Add the boiled water a little at a time to the Ogi paste while stirring simultaneously. The Ogi paste starts to thicken as you add the boiled water.
  4. Stop adding water once you get your desired consistency 
  5.  Another way to prepare Ogi is to mix the Ogi and water in a pot and stir continuously under low heat until the mixture thickens.
  6. Wait for the Ogi to cool and pour into a blender or baby bullet
  7. Add the banana and strawberries or any fruit of choice and blend together
  8. You can serve with baby milk or breast milk
  9. Do not add sugar or honey if feeding a baby that’s under 1 year old

Ogi contains only 1.8% protein, less than 1% fat and 310 kcal/100g as compared to about 9% of protein and 4% fat in maize. The loss in nutrient is due to the fermentation and sieving processes during the processing technique from maize to Ogi. Adding fruits like banana and berries to the Ogi are a great source nutrients for your baby.

 

Tom Brown porridge 

What makes up Tom Brown mix is a mixture of yellow corn, guinea corn and millet, soybeans and groundnuts. The cereals and legumes add a variety of nutrients beneficial to a baby's good health. Tom Brown consists of protein, iron, magnesium, potassium, carbohydrate,  vitamin B6 and Vitamin B12.

 Ingredients:

  • Tom Brown Powder
  • Water 
  • Baby Formula or Breast Milk (Optional)
  • Fresh strawberries, banana or any fruit of choice

 Directions:

  • Dissolve your Tom Brown powder in a large bowl with just enough water to form a smooth thick paste.
  • Place a pot on the stove and add water or milk 
  • Then add the thick paste of Tom Brown and stir continuously under medium heat
  • Continue till smooth, light and not too thick. Add more water or milk till it reaches your preferred consistency
  •  Add mashed/pureed banana, strawberries or apple or any fruit of choice

 

Tip: Stir the Tom Brown Porridge continuously as soon as you start cooking to avoid lumps

 Quinoa

Quinoa is a very healthy grain. It contains almost twice as much fiber as other grains, which makes it great for babies’ sensitive digestive organs. It is also an excellent source of Protein, Iron and Magnesium

Ingredients:

  • Quinoa
  • Breast Milk
  • Water
  • Fresh strawberries, banana or any fruit of choice

 Directions:

  • Cook Qiunoa for about 5 minutes
  • Transfer the cooked quinoa into the blender
  • Add in a little water, or breast milk
  • Puree together with your fruit of choice until it is nice and smooth or you may add fruits and veggies that are age appropriate for your child.
  • Serve straight away, or freeze for future use
